The Elbow Saga
An Elbow Tale
Today during training we did a new cycle that comes from chi sao. One is inside doing bong sao and the other defends with a fook sao, like chi sao goes. Then from tan sao, one punches the opponent. The opponent blocks the punch, moving it away from their center line. That’s when the opponent does an inside pak sao and then step and a fak sao to the neck.
I block with woo sao and let it become a bong sao and punch under it. The opponent blocks my punch exactly the same way as from the chi sao and then I do pak sao and fak sao and the cycle continues.
It was a hard drill, I won’t lie. I didn’t mind though as it was the first time I ever did it.
What I do mind about are my elbows during fook sao over the opponent’s bong sao in the chi sao. They were very high, easily exploitable by the opponent if he pleases.
During the first form I always keep the elbow low when doing the fook sao. But not during chi sao, it seems.
It’s part of a long Saga of Exposed Elbows which has been accompanying my Wing Chun Journey. And one I have to pay a bit more attention to if I don’t wish to get hit.
Side note: I love how
Lesson of the day: watch them elbows! And keep them low during fook sao. Until next time you forget 😀
